Now lets talk about the single most venerable piece of equipment you own! Eavesdroppers know and use this! Because your phone wiring is so easily accessible at the junction box on your building or home, the phone pole, or the pedestal (if wiring is underground) your phone can be tapped or bugged in less than 1 minute. These devices of course are illegal, but readily available for as little as 10 dollars at your local electronic store. Including wireless microphones, walkie talkies, and yes even baby monitors can easily be converted into a bug, anywhere from the phone to the CO (company office) and these devices can transmit both sides of the conversation from a few feet to a mile away, depending upon the power of the transmitter. Many of these devices transmit on the FM radio band, or just above or below on unassigned frequencies within the FM band and can be recieved on a standard radio or with an inexpensive scanner up to 150 ft or more.
Cell Phones, Cordless Phones,900mhz- frequency hopping, 2.4ghz DSS (Digital Spread Spectrum) are all venerable to illicit evesdropping. Despite what the salesperson told you. A good rule of thumb is if it has an antenna its not safe PERIOD! Simple solution Don't talk about sensitive information on the phone, have these conversations face to face in a secure location.
